Setup guide

Setup

Install AJC Site Health, paste this site's key, and handle staging copies and moved sites.

Version 1.1.1 · WordPress 6.0+ · PHP 8.1+ · Licensed GPL-2.0-or-later

AJC Site Health is for WordPress sites maintained by A&J Computers. Each site needs its own site key from A&J Computers before it reports anything. There is nothing to edit in wp-config.php.

Install

  1. Download the plugin from the overview page and upload it under Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin. Activate it.
  2. Open Tools → AJC Site Health.
  3. Paste the site key A&J Computers gave you for this site into Site key and press Save. It is one line that starts with SH1.; paste it exactly as sent.
  4. The page shows Site key saved for site …, and the first report goes out within a few minutes.

Until a valid key is saved, the plugin sends nothing, and an admin notice says so. A key that is not in the right form is refused when you save it, with a message saying so.

Where the key is kept

The key is stored in one WordPress option. The secret part of it is encrypted with this site's WordPress security keys (the AUTH_KEY and SECURE_AUTH_KEY lines in wp-config.php), so a database backup or export on its own does not reveal it. Once saved, the secret is never shown again on any screen, only the site id it belongs to.

If those security keys change, which happens when a host regenerates them or when the database is moved to a different WordPress install, the saved key can no longer be read. The Tools page and an admin notice then say: "The saved site key can no longer be read (this site's WordPress security keys changed). Paste the site key again." Paste the same key again and reporting carries on. If the key is lost, ask A&J Computers for it again.

To replace the key, paste the new one into the same field. To stop reporting, press Remove key.

Sites set up with version 1.0.0

Version 1.0.0 was configured with define() lines in wp-config.php. Those sites keep working with no change. While AJC_SITE_HEALTH_SITE_ID and AJC_SITE_HEALTH_SECRET are both there they take priority, and the Tools page shows the key as set in wp-config.php and cannot change it. To manage the key on the Tools page instead, remove those lines and paste the site key.

The Tools page

Tools → AJC Site Health shows which site the key is for, when the site last tried to report, what happened, and when a report was last accepted. There is no "send now" button: reports go out twice a day on their own.

Staging copies

A staging copy or clone answers to a different address from the live site. The plugin notices, pauses itself, and says so on the Tools page. Leave a staging copy paused: that is what keeps it from overwriting the live site's report.

A site that really moved

If the live site moved to a new domain:

  1. Ask A&J Computers to move the site to its new address.
  2. Open Tools → AJC Site Health and press Resume reporting.

If you resume before A&J Computers has moved it, the report is refused and the page says so. Nothing is lost; resume again once the move is done.

Removing it

Deactivate and delete the plugin as usual. Deleting it removes the saved site key, its stored state, its log and its scheduled event. Ask A&J Computers to retire the site.

Updates

After the first install, updates arrive through WordPress's normal update screen. Each one is checked against a signed release manifest before it installs.
